Subway Just Dropped Its First-Ever Value Menu: 15 Items Under $5 Starting Today
Subway just made its boldest move in years. Starting today, April 28, the chain is rolling out its first-ever value menu — 15 entrees, all under $5, available at more than 18,000 U.S. locations. It is called the Fresh Value Menu, and it is a direct challenge to every fast food chain that has been cutting portions while raising prices.
The timing is not accidental. Fast food prices have been a sore spot for a while now. Customers are paying $10 for a burger combo that used to cost $6. Subway is betting that freshly made, protein-forward meals at under five bucks can pull people back in — and off competitors’ apps.
What’s on the Fresh Value Menu
The menu has three tiers. First are the Deli Faves — four six-inch subs at $3.99 each. Two are new: the Spicy Pepperoni (aged pepperoni, Pepper Jack, jalapeños, creamy Sriracha) and Ham & Salami (Black Forest ham, Genoa salami, Italian Provolone, honey mustard). The other two are returning classics: the B.L.T. and the Cold Cut Combo.
Second are the Protein Pockets at $3.99 — a grab-and-go wrap format with over 20 grams of protein each. Four options: Baja Chicken, Peppercorn Ranch Chicken, Italian Trio, and Turkey Ham. These launched earlier this year and are now being folded into the value lineup officially.
Third is Sub of the Day at $4.99 — a different six-inch every day of the week. Meatball Monday. Tuna Tuesday. Sweet Onion Teriyaki Wednesday. Turkey Thursday. Black Forest Ham Friday. Italian B.M.T. Saturday. Spicy Italian Sunday. Add chips and a drink for $2 more.
Why This Matters Right Now
Subway has been on a quiet comeback. The chain refreshed its bread in 2021, rebuilt its menu, and has been steadily improving its in-store experience. But it has struggled to land a clean value story in an era when McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King have all leaned hard into cheap combo deals.
A $3.99 freshly made six-inch sub with real vegetables is a genuinely different offer. It is not a frozen patty on a discount bun. Subway’s CMO Dave Skena put it plainly: “Your wallet and stomach deserve freshly-baked bread, real protein and the perfect combination of sauces and hand-chopped veggies — all for under $5.” That pitch lands differently when most fast food combos are pushing $12 to $15.
The Catch
Prices are higher in California, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. The $5 add-on (chips + drink) is fountain-drink only, no delivery. Third-party delivery adds fees on top. So the $3.99 sub can climb fast if you are ordering through DoorDash or Uber Eats. The value play is really designed for in-store visits — which is exactly what Subway needs.
The Fresh Value Menu is live now at the Subway app and subway.com, or look for the new yellow section on the in-store menu board. If the $3.99 Spicy Pepperoni is half as good as it sounds, this could be the value move of the year.
