Chipotle Is Giving Away 2 Million Dollars in Free Burritos to Teachers and Healthcare Workers
Every year around Teacher Appreciation Week, Chipotle does something worth paying attention to. This year they are doing it bigger than ever: up to $2 million in free burritos, split between teachers and healthcare workers across the country.
The company announced April 29 that it will give away free entree e-gift cards to up to 100,000 teachers and 100,000 healthcare workers, for a total of 200,000 people. The giveaway runs through May 12, covering both Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 through May 8) and National Nurses Week (May 6 through May 12).
How to Enter
You do not need to buy anything or download an app. Chipotle is running the giveaway through ID.me, the identity verification service. Teachers and healthcare workers visit chipotle.com/free, verify their credentials through ID.me, and get entered for the chance to receive a free entree e-gift card.
Winners are randomly selected. If you qualify, you have until May 12 to get your entry in.
Who Qualifies
The giveaway covers two groups. Teachers are eligible during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4 through May 8. Healthcare workers are eligible during National Nurses Week, May 6 through May 12. If you fall into both categories, you qualify under either window.
Chipotle is not limiting this to any one profession within healthcare. Nurses, doctors, hospital staff, and other medical professionals should be eligible as long as they can verify through ID.me.
Why Chipotle Keeps Doing This
This is not a one-off promotion. Chipotle has been running some version of this giveaway since 2016, and last year saw the highest participation in the program's history. Since the program started, the company has given away more than $16 million in free Chipotle to teachers and medical professionals.
It is a smart play. The people who benefit are often the ones most likely to talk about it, share it online, and come back as regular customers. A free burrito is a low-cost way to build a lot of goodwill.
What You Can Get
The e-gift card covers any entree, which means a burrito, bowl, salad, or order of tacos. Standard Chipotle menu prices apply. Guacamole and queso are still extra, because of course they are.
For teachers and healthcare workers who are already Chipotle regulars, this is essentially a free lunch or dinner during a week when both groups deserve a little recognition.
How to Claim It
Head to chipotle.com/free between now and May 12. Complete the verification through ID.me, which requires proof of your employment status. The process takes a few minutes. If you are selected, the e-gift card arrives by email and can be used at any participating Chipotle location or online.
The $2 million cap means not everyone who enters will receive one, but with 200,000 cards available, the odds are reasonable if you qualify and enter early.
Chipotle's Community Track Record
Beyond the annual teacher and nurse giveaway, Chipotle has built a reputation for community-focused promotions that actually deliver. Their free guacamole for Cinco de Mayo, their rewards program bonuses around sporting events, and now this escalating annual giveaway all point to a brand strategy centered on making people feel like they are getting something real, not just a coupon.
The $16 million figure since 2016 is notable. That is a long-term commitment to a specific audience. Most fast food brands run one-off promotions and move on. Chipotle has made this particular giveaway a calendar event that people now anticipate and share every spring.
For the brand, the timing is good. Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week both generate significant social media activity. A free burrito give a reason to post, tag, and spread the word organically without Chipotle having to run a single ad.
Where to Watch for Updates
If you want to stay updated on the giveaway as it rolls out this week, Chipotle's social channels will be the fastest source of real-time updates. Their Instagram and X accounts tend to post verification of available entries in real time during these promotions, and the Chipotle app usually surfaces the offer directly for Chipotle Rewards members who qualify.
Even if you are not a teacher or healthcare worker, it is worth knowing these promotions exist. Chipotle typically follows these community-focused weeks with broader offers for all customers shortly after. Keep an eye on their rewards program through May.
