I don’t know how bagels became a breakfast staple. Eating one of these dense mounds of dough in the morning is about as healthy of a way to start your day as an 8-ball of cocaine and an IV drip of coffee.

OK that might be a stretch but in all seriousness unless you just went on a 3-mile run and plan on working out again later in the day, chomping down on a bagel every single morning isn’t exactly the best idea.

But that doesn’t change the fact that there are fewer things more satisfying and delicious as chomping down on a warm bagel slathered with cream cheese.

And because they’re such a beloved food, that means bakers aren’t afraid to toy with different variations of this ringed- carb-filled delight.

By spicing them up with different, uh, spices and ingredients, you can get creative with the fillings that go in between the two slices of heaven.

And because it’s National Have a Bagel day, you want to make sure that your bagel experience is a special one. So instead of just having a plain with cream cheese, maybe be a little more adventurous and try one of these new classics.
